6 Simple Steps to Extend the Vase Life of your Bouquet

I can’t imagine not having fresh flowers in my home. I love to grow them in my yard, but I really love to cut the blooms and bring them inside to enjoy. Chances are you feel the same. Whether you are cutting blooms from your own garden or you’ve just come home from the farmer’s market with a lovely bunch of local blooms, you want to find the perfect vase and display that beauty where it can be enjoyed for days. Since flowers are a luxury that won’t last forever, follow these simple steps to ensure a longer vase life.

  1. Fill a clean vase with fresh water. Make sure your water is room temperature and your vase is clean enough that you would drink from it.
  2. Remove any leaves or foliage that will sit beneath the water line. Anything left to float in the water will begin to degrade and cause bacteria to form, thus clogging the intake of water through the flower’s stem.
  3. Cut your stems at an angle to ensure that they will not lie flat against the bottom of your vessel. Since flowers use their stems like a straw to drink up the water, you want to ensure they have the best chance at sucking up that water.
  4. Change water and re-cut stems every 2 days.
  5. Display in a cool spot away from ripening fruit, direct sunlight and airflow such as an air conditioner, heater vent or ceiling fan which will cause your flowers to dry out.
  6. Enjoy for days!
